Chesterfield, MI — A 10-year-old student at Green Elementary School in Chesterfield Township was found with bullets inside their backpack this week, prompting an investigation by school officials and local police.
According to L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, staff received a report about the ammunition and immediately contacted administration and law enforcement. After reviewing the situation, officials confirmed there was no firearm on campus and no direct threat made toward students or staff.
Chesterfield Township Police Sgt. Joseph Feld said the child did not make any threats. Investigators believe the student may have brought the bullets to school without understanding the seriousness of the situation.
“It appears that he just thought it was like the cool thing to do,” Feld said.
The school, located on Sugarbush Road near 21 Mile Road, remained safe throughout the incident, officials said. Families were notified in a letter reminding parents to speak with their children about the dangers of bringing weapons, look-alike weapons, ammunition, or other prohibited items to school.
The letter emphasized that even items not intended to cause harm can create fear and disruption in the learning environment and violate school policy.
The investigation remains ongoing.
