100-Vehicle Pileup Shuts Down I-196 in West Michigan Amid Icy Conditions

West Michigan — A massive multi-vehicle crash involving approximately 100 vehicles forced the complete closure of westbound and eastbound I-196 in Ottawa County on Monday, according to authorities.

The crash occurred between 32nd Avenue and 64th Street in Hudsonville shortly after 10:19 a.m. amid icy road conditions. Westbound I-196 was initially closed at 32nd Avenue before the shutdown was expanded to both directions between exits 62 and 55 as the scope of the incident became clear.

Authorities say numerous injuries have been reported, but as of the latest update, none are believed to be fatal.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Michigan State Police. MSP confirmed that additional troopers and resources from both the 5th and 6th Districts have been deployed to manage the scene.

Officials estimate that 30–40 semi-trucks are among the vehicles involved. Investigators emphasized that not every vehicle present was part of the collision, noting that multiple slide-offs occurred as drivers encountered slick pavement.

Emergency crews are currently focused on clearing non-involved vehicles from the roadway and securing the scene before any reopening can be considered. I-196 is expected to remain closed for an extended period while recovery and investigation efforts continue.
