13-Month-Old Girl Found Crying Inside Impounded Vehicle in Metro Detroit; One Man in Custody

Harper Woods, MI – A 13-month-old girl is recovering after being discovered alone inside a vehicle that had been towed and impounded in Metro Detroit over the weekend.

Police say the child was found Saturday afternoon in a car that had been taken to a tow yard in Eastpointe. The vehicle had been towed a day earlier from the 20600 block of Damman Street in Harper Woods.

According to authorities, at approximately 1:00 p.m. Saturday, a detective with the Detroit Police Department contacted the Harper Woods Police Department regarding a missing 1-year-old child. During that investigation, Detroit police learned that a vehicle registered to the child’s father had been impounded Friday by Harper Woods officers.

Police said the vehicle was towed because it was abandoned, improperly parked on the prohibited side of the street, and blocking a resident’s driveway. Officials stated the vehicle was locked at the time it was towed and could not be thoroughly inventoried.

With the possibility that the missing toddler could be inside, officers from both departments immediately responded to the tow yard. There, they located the crying child in the rear seat of the vehicle.

Weather conditions in Metro Detroit were reported to be in the mid-50s during the day Friday and dropped into the high-40s overnight. Authorities have not confirmed exactly how long the child was inside the vehicle.

The toddler was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and observation. By Monday morning, she was listed in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police confirmed that Child Protective Services has been contacted and a case has been opened. An adult male has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody as detectives continue their investigation.

Officials say criminal charges are possible. The investigation remains ongoing.
