20 Felony Charges Filed Against Former Harper Woods Nursing Assistant Accused of Targeting Elderly Resident

Harper Woods, MI — A 29-year-old Detroit man is facing a staggering 20 felony charges after Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced he allegedly stole thousands from a vulnerable nursing home resident while working as a certified nursing assistant.

Authorities say Terrance Brown Jr. took a 68-year-old resident’s debit card and carried out 18 unauthorized transactions between February 28 and March 2, 2024, totaling $8,915.53. The transactions reportedly included ATM withdrawals and retail purchases, many of which were captured on surveillance video.

Brown is charged with one count of larceny in a building, one count of stealing a financial transaction device, and eighteen counts of using a financial transaction device without consent — bringing the total to 20 felony charges, each punishable by up to four years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.

CHARGES:

  • One count of Larceny in a Building, a felony punishable by up to four years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine;
  • One count of Stealing a Financial Transaction Device, a felony punishable by up to four years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine; and
  • Eighteen counts of Using a Financial Transaction Device Without Consent, each a separate felony offense punishable by up to four years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine.

Brown was released on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond and is barred from working in any nursing home or adult care facility. He is due back in court for a probable cause conference on March 25.

“Stealing from vulnerable adults, especially when that theft is committed by someone entrusted with their care, is an egregious crime,” said Attorney General Nessel. “My office will continue protecting Michigan’s seniors and holding accountable those who exploit their positions of trust.”

The case was investigated by the Attorney General’s Health Care Fraud Division with assistance from the Harper Woods Police Department.

All charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
