Detroit, MI – A 23-year-old driver was killed early Sunday morning after crashing into a tow truck along I-96 on Detroit’s west side, according to Michigan State Police.
The crash happened around 3:05 a.m. Sunday, March 8, on eastbound I-96 near Outer Drive. A Metro South trooper on patrol first spotted a tow truck near the concrete wall along the freeway and stopped to investigate.
Troopers say when they reentered the freeway they discovered a passenger car blocking the middle lane and the tow truck stopped on the left shoulder.
A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the sedan lost control and struck the rear of the tow truck’s bed.
The tow truck driver was transported to a local hospital and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The 23-year-old driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said family notification is still pending, and the identity of the victim has not yet been released.
The crash remains under investigation.
