40-YEAR-OLD ILLEGAL ENTERS U.S. WITH RENTED JET SKI FROM SARNIA

An illegal immigrant has allegedly crossed over into the United States after failing to return a rented Sea-Doo jet ski from a business in Sarnia.

The incident began on Saturday night at around 6:40pm when the individual identified as 40-year-old Romeo Bajrami from Toronto rented his Sea-Doo with cash.

He was supposed to return with the ski at 7:45pm but never returned. The business called him and he told them he was 10 minutes away.

At 8:20pm the company called him again and he said he would be back shortly. Finally at 9:40pm when he never returned police were called.

The Canadian Coast Guard, Sarnia fire, and Point Edward fire were all notified and started a marine search of the St. Clair River, focusing on areas south of the marina toward Stag Island and north into Lake Huron.

Shortly after midnight, the U.S. Coast Guard found the Sea-Doo on the American shore south of Sarnia. With the Sea-Doo was a shirt that the suspect was last seen wearing, a life jacket, and keys to the Sea-Doo.

“It is believed [the 40-year-old man from Toronto] was successful in conducting an illegal border crossing. U.S. Customs and Immigration were notified and are investigating this incident,” said police.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
