A tragic drowning at an Oakland County swimming facility is under investigation after a 4-year-old girl from Sterling Heights was pronounced dead Friday night.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, detectives were called to the Deer Lake Athletic Club in Independence Township after reports of a child found unresponsive in a swimming pool shortly after 7:30 p.m. The club is located in the 600 block of White Lake Road.
First responders attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but the child was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the girl’s name due to her age.
Investigators are now working to determine how the child ended up in distress in the pool and whether any safety or supervision failures contributed to the incident.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and additional details will be released as they become available.
An earlier report by the Sheriffs Department incorrectly listed the child’s age as 5. Her correct age is 4.
