West Bloomfield Man Arraigned After Shooting Outside Sterling Heights Gym

Sterling Heights, MI — An 18-year-old West Bloomfield man has been arraigned on multiple felony charges following a shooting outside a Sterling Heights fitness center that left a minor injured.

According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident happened Sunday, March 15, 2026, in the parking lot of Edge Fitness. Authorities say a group of teens and young adults had gathered at the location anticipating a pre-arranged fight, setting the stage for what prosecutors describe as a dangerous escalation.

Investigators allege that during the confrontation, shots were fired from a Ford F150 driven by Joseph Maroof. One minor was struck in the foot by a bullet, suffering a non-life-threatening injury.

The case expanded beyond the shooting itself. Prosecutors say that during the execution of a search warrant, law enforcement recovered counterfeit currency from a safe and lockbox belonging to Maroof, adding additional felony charges to the case.

Maroof was arraigned March 18 before Magistrate Jean M. Cloud in 41A District Court. He is charged with discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle causing injury, a 15-year felony, along with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of counterfeit bank or municipal bills, both 5-year felonies.

Bond was set at $200,000 cash/surety, with no 10% option. If released, Maroof must wear a steel cuff tether and have no contact with the alleged victim.

He is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference on March 26 at 1:00 p.m. before Judge Annemarie Lepore.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido called the case a troubling example of youth violence escalating into serious criminal conduct.

“This situation highlights how quickly planned confrontations can turn into life-altering events,” Lucido said. “The allegations in this case are extremely serious, and the consequences will be significant.”

The investigation remains ongoing.

As with all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
