Whitmer Jets Off To Japan With Entourage Of Nearly 20 – On Your Dime

Governor Gretchen Whitmer quietly slipped out of Michigan this past weekend, boarding a flight overseas with an entourage of nearly 20 state officials and allies on what’s being billed as an “investment mission.”

The governor left August 31st bound first for Singapore, and then on to Japan, with her schedule including a stop at the Midwest U.S.–Japan Association Conference in Tokyo. State press releases insist the purpose of the trip is to promote Michigan and attract foreign business, but critics see it for what it is, another taxpayer-funded vacation disguised as economic development.

This marks yet another international excursion for Whitmer in 2025. Earlier this year she took trips abroad for similar “missions,” each time accompanied by a large delegation and hefty travel bills. The current swing through Asia totals nearly 12,000 miles, with taxpayers footing the cost of flights, accommodations, and security for the governor and her group.

Officials claim the meetings will lead to stronger business ties, but taxpayers back home are left asking the same question: Why is the governor racking up overseas air miles while Michigan residents struggle with rising costs, crumbling infrastructure, and stagnant services?

As one longtime Lansing insider put it, “call it what you want but to most Michiganders it looks like another paid vacation, and the tab goes straight to the taxpayers.”
