MICHIGAN JV FOOTBALL PLAYER SUFFERS FRACTURED SPINE AFTER BEING JUMPED ON DURING GAME

A Thursday night junior varsity football game in Southwest Michigan ended with a disturbing injury that has shaken two school communities and raised tough questions about player safety.

15-year-old Colton Mims, a freshman linebacker for Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, suffered two spinal fractures after a violent hit during the September 18th game against Kalamazoo Central High School.

According to witnesses and multiple reports, Mims had already been brought to the ground when a Kalamazoo Central offensive lineman stood up and launched his body weight onto Mims’ back. The force of the hit left the teenager in agony. Doctors later confirmed compression fractures to his T12 and L1 vertebrae.

“This was not a football play. This was disturbing conduct,” one parent who witnessed the game told reporters.

Mims was rushed to the hospital where he underwent testing and was diagnosed with the fractured spine. He has since been released and is now recovering at home, but doctors say his season is over. Whether he will ever return to the field is still uncertain.

The Kalamazoo Central player responsible for the hit was reportedly ejected from the game for unnecessary roughness, though questions remain about whether further discipline will follow.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has confirmed the incident is under review, saying it falls under the rule prohibiting hits against defenseless players. Both schools are also said to be “handling the matter internally.”

“We are aware of the incident and are working with both schools to ensure this is addressed appropriately,” an MHSAA spokesperson told reporters.

For the Mims family, the focus is on healing and ensuring Colton has a long-term recovery.

“He is a strong kid, and he has a community behind him,” a family friend said. “But this never should have happened. Players need to be protected from things that are outside the game.”

No criminal charges have been filed at this time, though the family and supporters say they are watching closely. For now, Stevensville rallies behind Colton as he faces months of recovery.
