Trooper injured after patrol car struck on I-96 in Detroit

A Michigan State Police trooper was hurt late Sunday morning after a driver lost control and crashed into the patrol car on I-96 near Fullerton Avenue.

It happened around 11 a.m. while the trooper was investigating a separate one-car crash on the left shoulder. Police say a 55-year-old Detroit man driving a Jeep Cherokee lost control in wet conditions and hit the back of the patrol car, pushing it into the vehicle from the earlier crash.

The trooper, who was inside the patrol car at the time, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two passengers from the Jeep were also hospitalized with minor injuries.

The freeway was closed for several hours during the investigation.

“It is important for drivers to remember to slow down in wet weather,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “This driver was not only going too fast for road conditions but had three of his four tires worn below the wear bars, which led to the crash.”
