Eastpointe man bound over after trying to stab officer in the face with a screwdriver

Mt. Clemens, MI – A 32-year-old Eastpointe man accused of trying to stab a Sterling Heights police officer in the face with a screwdriver has been bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court to face felony charges.

Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said Joshua Mills waived his preliminary exam in the 41st District Court before Judge Kimberley A. Wiegand on Monday, October 27, 2025. Mills will now be arraigned in circuit court before Judge Richard L. Caretti on Monday, November 10 at 9:30 a.m.

Mills is charged with:
~ 1 Count: Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm less than Murder (10-year felony)
~ 2 Counts: Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing a Police Officer (2-year felony each)
~ 1 Count: Retail Fraud, Second-Degree (1-year misdemeanor)

Police say the incident happened on October 5, 2025, at the Walmart on Van Dyke in Sterling Heights. Officers responded after Mills allegedly left the store without paying for merchandise. When officers identified themselves, Mills ran. After a brief chase, an officer deployed a taser.

As officers moved in to make the arrest, prosecutors say Mills sat up and swung a screwdriver toward an officer’s face, narrowly missing him. After a short struggle, Mills was taken into custody.

Mills remains held in the Macomb County Jail on $500,000 cash/surety bond and has requested a criminal responsibility assessment through the forensic center.

Prosecutor Lucido said, “We respect the defendant’s right to request a criminal responsibility assessment, and we will continue to pursue justice in accordance with the law and the evidence.”

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
