Detroit — The Detroit Lions have officially locked down one of their biggest defensive stars for the long haul. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson has agreed to a four-year contract extension, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
While the financial details haven’t been released, the deal is expected to place Hutchinson among the highest-paid edge rushers in the NFL.
From Dearborn to Defensive Cornerstone
The 25-year-old Dearborn native and former Michigan Wolverine has quickly become the face of Detroit’s defense. Drafted No. 2 overall in 2022, Hutchinson has totaled 34.5 career sacks between the regular season and postseason.
He led the NFL with 7.5 sacks through six games in 2024 before a freak leg injury — a fractured tibia and fibula — ended his season. After an offseason of relentless rehab, he returned in 2025 stronger than ever, already posting six sacks, four forced fumbles, and an NFL-best 6.9 pressures per game through seven weeks.
The Core of Detroit’s Future
Hutchinson’s new deal runs through 2030, and he now headlines a group of young stars that form the foundation of the Lions’ long-term success:
- Aidan Hutchinson: Signed through 2030
- Penei Sewell: Signed through 2029
- Jameson Williams: Signed through 2029
- Kerby Joseph: Signed through 2029
- Amon-Ra St. Brown: Signed through 2028
- Jared Goff: Signed through 2028
- Alim McNeill: Signed through 2028
The Lions have prioritized retaining their homegrown talent, handing out extensions that lock in the franchise’s key pillars across both sides of the ball.
A Changing Culture
Since Hutchinson’s arrival, Detroit has gone 41-17, the fourth-best record in the NFL. In the four seasons before his debut, the team went 17-46-2, one of the worst marks in the league.
His arrival — and the rise of this young core — has fueled a complete turnaround under GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell.
Quote of the Day
“When you can get leg-whipped, you start to have that confidence where, ‘I’ve got a steel rod in my leg and that thing’s not going anywhere,’”
— Aidan Hutchinson on his comeback.
