We’ve been telling you about the largest ICE detention center in the midwest and how it was going to be in northern Michigan. Well, it’s officially opened and now accepting inmates.
The North Lake Correctional Facility which is owned and operated by the GEO Group started housing illegal immigrants on Monday, June 16th.
The 1,800 bed jail has entered into a multi-year contract with ICE that’s expected to generate $70 Million in its first full year of operation.
The reopened jail is expected to create 500 jobs.
GEO Group says it provides medical care, visitation, library access, translation services, recreational amenities and opportunities for detainees to practice their religious beliefs at its ICE facilities.
“Over the last four decades, our innovative support service solutions have helped the federal government implement the policies of seven different presidential administrations,” the company said in a statement.
