Oakland County Charges Repeat Offender in New Bank Robbery Case

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald has charged Alvin Myron Murray, a 68-year-old Detroit man, with Bank Robbery, accusing him of returning to the same crime pattern that sent him to prison decades ago.

According to investigators, on November 10, 2025, Murray walked into First Merchant Bank in Ferndale, approached the counter, and handed the teller a note demanding money. The teller complied. A witness later identified him, and detectives soon linked Murray to an October 2025 bank robbery in Ann Arbor.

Prosecutor McDonald warned, “Bank robberies endanger employees and customers. Thanks to law enforcement, the message to this defendant and any other would-be robbers is, you might get away from the scene, but you won’t get away with the crime.”

Under Michigan law, Bank Robbery is punishable by any term of years up to life in prison.

A Long History of Bank Robberies

Murray was released from prison on April 29, 2024, after serving sentences for seven prior bank robberies committed in the late 1980s across Oakland and Wayne Counties. His record includes:

  • Three Oakland County bank robberies (Oct–Nov 1988)
Minimum 13 years each, maximum 50 years
  • Four Wayne County bank robberies (Oct 1988–Jan 1989)
Minimum 18 years each, maximum 36 years
  • Earlier convictions for uttering checks without sufficient funds (1978) and unlawfully driving away an automobile (1978)

All of those cases discharged in 2024, after decades in custody.

Now, just a year and a half after his release, Murray is again accused of robbing banks.

Charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
