A Detroit man has been charged in the death of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter, nearly one year after prosecutors say he fatally assaulted the child.
According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, 21-year-old Lovenia Spivey is accused of causing the fatal injuries on November 15, 2024, inside a home in the 14000 block of Riverview Street on Detroit’s west side. Police reports indicate paramedics found the child with severe head trauma around 2:40 a.m. She was transported to the hospital, where she died on November 18, 2024.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner ruled the death blunt force trauma to the head, consistent with an assault. Prosecutors allege Spivey, who was dating the child’s mother at the time, was responsible for the injuries.
Detroit police arrested him on November 14, 2025, following what they described as an extensive, year-long investigation. The prosecutor’s office did not provide an explanation for the lengthy gap between the child’s death and the filing of charges.
Spivey now faces:
• Felony murder
• First-degree child abuse
