Early Morning System to Bring Snow, Rain, and Slush Tuesday

A weak low-pressure system will slide into Lower Michigan late Monday night and into Tuesday, delivering the region’s first light winter event of the season. The National Weather Service says precipitation will begin sometime after 4 a.m. Tuesday, though the exact start time will vary by location. The heaviest period of activity is expected between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The system starts off as light snow before temperatures climb above freezing. After 9 a.m., much of the region should flip to a mix of wet snow and rain. Meteorologists say the threat of freezing rain is very low before 9 a.m., keeping the focus on slushy conditions instead of ice for most commuters.

Snow totals remain minimal. Less than an inch is expected, mainly on grassy areas, rooftops, decks, and elevated surfaces. Any slush that forms will melt quickly as temperatures rise during the day.

Drivers should still be prepared for reduced visibility, wet pavement, and the season’s first slick spots during the morning rush. The Winter Storm Severity Index places Southeast Michigan in the “minor impacts” category — meaning some inconveniences are possible, especially for those traveling early.
