Victim Shot Inside Unauthorized Barbershop
According to investigators, the 21-year-old victim was shot Friday evening while getting a haircut in a private barbershop that was being run after hours by a contracted janitor without approval from Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD).
Police say the victim was dropped off at a local hospital around 6:45 p.m., where the driver told staff the shooting occurred at the school. Responding officers located a crime scene at the rear of the building.
The janitor witnessed the shooting and was not hurt.
Suspect and Victim Knew Each Other
Investigators believe the victim and suspect likely knew each other, and they stress this was not a school shooting. No students or DPSCD staff were present at the time.
DPSCD issued a statement confirming the shooting involved individuals who were not part of the school community, adding the district is fully cooperating with the investigation.
