Mother Who Admitted Throwing Infant Hard Enough to Cause Brain Bleed Gets 182 Days In County Jail & Probation

Bailey R. Sian, a 28-year-old Bay City mother who admitted to throwing her infant across a motel room in March 2022, has now received her sentence in Bay County Circuit Court. The case drew significant attention due to the severity of the child’s injuries and the circumstances Sian described under oath. According to court testimony, Sian threw her baby onto a motel bed because he was sick, vomiting, and crying. The child bounced off the mattress, struck a metal bedframe, and hit the floor face-first. In the days that followed, the infant suffered seizures, partial paralysis, and a documented brain bleed, prompting medical staff to notify law enforcement. It was the child’s grandmother, not Sian who ultimately called 911 when the baby’s lips turned blue and his body began convulsing.

Sian was originally charged with second-degree child abuse, a 10-year felony. Prosecutors later agreed to a plea deal that reduced the conviction to third-degree child abuse, a two-year high-court misdemeanor. Sian entered her guilty plea on Oct. 6, 2025, admitting to the act that caused the infant’s injuries. The plea agreement dismissed the more serious charge, and as a result shifted the case from potential prison time to a lower-level abuse conviction with a significantly capped sentence.

On Nov. 17, 2025, Judge sentenced Sian to 182 days in the Bay County Jail, with two days of credit for time served. She was also given 36 months of probation, which she must complete following release from custody. The court declined to suspend any portion of the jail term. Records show she will serve her full sentence at the Bay County Jail unless granted early release through standard jail policies unrelated to the court.

Financially, Sian must pay $130 in Crime Victim Rights fees, $60 for DNA testing, and $68 in state minimum costs. The court placed her on a long-term $50-per-month payment plan, scheduled to begin on June 15, 2026. No fines were suspended, and no alternative sentencing options, such as community service in lieu of jail were granted.

As of now, officials have not released updated information regarding the child’s long-term condition, including whether any lasting neurological or developmental issues remain. What we can say is what MLive reported, which is that she does not have custody of this child, however she was pregnant at the time of this incident. It’s unclear if she has custody of that child.

The case continues to spark reaction among residents who question how a baby could suffer a brain bleed and seizures, yet the defendant walk away without a felony or prison time. The plea deal and sentencing reflect the discretion prosecutors and judges hold in child abuse cases, but for many observers, the outcome appears far more lenient than the facts originally suggested.
