Romulus man found in rolled-over Suburban hours after crash happened near I-94 ramp

A 26-year-old man from Romulus is hospitalized after a violent rollover crash early Sunday on the southbound Lodge Freeway near the westbound I-94 ramp, an incident investigators believe may have taken place hours before anyone saw it.

Troopers were dispatched after the Detroit Regional Communication Center received a report of a single-vehicle rollover. When they arrived, they found a Chevy Suburban overturned with the driver trapped inside. Troopers attempted to pull him out while waiting for Detroit Fire to reach the scene. Fire crews ultimately extracted the unconscious driver, who still had a faint pulse. DFD medics transported him to a local hospital.

A preliminary investigation indicates the Suburban’s driver appeared to miss the ramp to westbound I-94, went up the grassy embankment, struck a tree, and rolled the vehicle. Investigators also noted there were no signs of braking before impact.

Based on conditions at the scene, troopers believe the crash may have occurred hours earlier, only becoming visible once the sun rose high enough to illuminate the area. The freeway was closed during the investigation.

“Currently the driver is receiving medical care,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor in why the driver missed the ramp. The investigation is ongoing.”
