Three juveniles are in custody after a broad-daylight carjacking in Roseville led to a police chase, a crash, and a brief manhunt inside a packed Sam’s Club on Monday afternoon.
According to the Roseville Police Department, the situation began around 1:30 p.m. when patrol officers noticed three males acting suspiciously near Gratiot Avenue and Masonic Boulevard. Roughly 30 minutes later, a 911 call came in reporting a carjacking at a nearby restaurant, where two elderly women had been approached by the same suspects.
Investigators say one of the juveniles pulled out what was described as an “edged weapon” and demanded the keys from a 67-year-old woman. Once they had the keys, all three jumped into the vehicle and sped off.
Officers quickly located the stolen vehicle on Gratiot near the I-94 interchange, sparking a pursuit through the northbound lanes. The chase ended when the juvenile driver crashed into another vehicle near the Sam’s Club parking lot. The driver of the uninvolved vehicle was not injured.
The suspected driver immediately ran from the crash scene and was caught within moments. The two passengers also fled in different directions. Roseville uniformed and plain-clothes officers spread out through the area, locating one of the juveniles hiding in nearby woods after a short foot chase.
The third suspect ran into the Sam’s Club store, prompting officers to surround the building while shoppers were still inside. Police swept the interior and found the teen hiding in the men’s restroom. He was taken into custody without further incident.
All three juveniles were transported to the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center, where they are being held while prosecutors determine charges.
