Major Blow to Lions Defense: Branch Suffers Achilles Tear

Lions standout defensive back Brian Branch has suffered a torn Achilles, shutting down his season and potentially impacting the start of 2026.

Branch went down with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter of Detroit’s 44-30 victory over Dallas, landing awkwardly while defending a pass in the end zone. After trainers helped him off the field, he was carted to the locker room. The team initially called it an ankle injury, but further testing confirmed the tear Friday morning.

Head coach Dan Campbell said after the game he feared the injury was serious.

Branch, 24, has been one of Detroit’s most valuable defenders since being drafted in the second round in 2023. He’s started all 12 games he’s played this season, recording 75 tackles, nine pass breakups and five quarterback hits.

The Lions secondary takes a major hit with his loss. Safety Kerby Joseph could ease the blow if he returns from a knee injury next week, while Thomas Harper and Daniel Thomas are expected to see increased roles moving forward.
