‘Family Matters’ Actor Darius McCrary AKA Eddie Winslow Released Pending Sentencing in Michigan Child Support Case

Pontiac, Michigan – Actor Darius McCrary, best known for playing Eddie Winslow on the 1990s sitcom Family Matters, has been released from the Oakland County Jail after entering a no contest plea in his Michigan felony child support case. McCrary, 49, appeared in Oakland County Circuit Court on December 8, where a judge accepted his plea and set his sentencing for February 9, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. The court ordered that the proceedings take place in person.

According to records obtained by New Media Detroit he was released at 5:55pm EST after making his plea official a few hours earlier.

McCrary had been in custody since October 29 after being extradited from California to Michigan. Court records show he was booked into the Oakland County Jail late that evening and remained held until his release on December 8 following the plea agreement.

The case stems from a long-running support dispute involving McCrary’s daughter with ex-wife Tammy Brawner, a former Harlem Globetrotter. In their 2019 divorce order, McCrary was required to pay $1,366 per month in total support. The court also ordered him to attend alcohol treatment, drug abuse counseling, and batterers intervention classes. His parenting time was limited until he completed a series of supervised visits.

McCrary was arrested on October 5 near the United States and Mexico border after he failed to appear for a Michigan hearing related to the case. Prosecutors in San Diego told a judge he posed a flight risk. His attorney said he had been performing charity work helping build homes for the unhoused and crossed into Mexico accidentally. A California judge denied him bail, keeping him in custody until Michigan officials completed his extradition.

Due to the years of missed hearings and alleged noncompliance with court orders, the felony case was reactivated and the court imposed a significant cash bond. McCrary is now out while awaiting sentencing in February.

He is expected to return to Oakland County Circuit Court on February 9 for a hearing that will determine the next steps in the case.
