Metro Detroit Armed Robbery Suspect Caught in Minnesota with Loaded Handgun While On the Run

A wanted armed-robbery suspect from Metro Detroit didn’t make it far.

Marc Cortez Sturkey, 23, of Detroit, was arrested in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, after police found a loaded 9mm handgun in a backpack during a Nov. 28 traffic stop, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.

A white Nissan Altima with New Jersey plates was reported swerving across lanes near a restaurant on Dell Road around 6:45 p.m. Officers said they smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and spotted cannabis packaging in view.

Sturkey, a front-seat passenger was checked through the system and came back with a nationwide arrest warrant for armed robbery out of Metro Detroit. Officers detained him immediately.

Police searched the vehicle and found a Canik TP9 SF Elite 9mm pistol and a magazine loaded with hollow-point rounds, the complaint states. Sturkey admitted the gun was his.

Despite Minnesota setting his bail at $6,000 in this case, he remains locked up because of:

  • An out-of-state extradition hold tied to the armed-robbery warrant
  • A Hennepin County warrant

Court records show Sturkey owes the City of Detroit $1,850 in unpaid fines for driving on a suspended license, no insurance and other violations, dating back to 2023.

He ignored those cases long enough for judges to issue warrants for those, too.

Now, Sturkey likely won’t be leaving custody anytime soon as Minnesota authorities are holding him until Michigan goes to pick him up.
