Flint Man Headed to Trial After Federal Agents Intercept Illegal Gun Conversion Kits Shipped From China

Federal agents say the packages were mislabeled as toys and contained devices capable of converting firearms to fully automatic weapons.

GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. — A Flint man is headed to trial after federal agents intercepted packages from China containing illegal firearm conversion devices that were allegedly disguised as children’s toys.

According to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office, Chad Edward Walker, 24, is scheduled to stand trial on March 7, 2026, in Genesee County Circuit Court on multiple felony charges, including firearm and drug offenses.

Prosecutors say that on July 29, 2024, and Aug. 3, 2024, agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted two packages at the Chicago O’Hare International Mail Branch. The packages, which originated from China, were allegedly mislabeled with the cargo description “racing car assembly toys.”

Authorities allege the parcels contained automatic pistol conversion devices and automatic AR conversion devices, which are designed to convert semiautomatic firearms into fully automatic weapons.

Investigators with the Flint Area Narcotics Group obtained an anticipatory search warrant from the prosecutor’s office prior to delivery of the parcels. On Aug. 21, 2024, the packages were delivered to an address on East Gracelawn Avenue in Flint under law enforcement surveillance.

Minutes after delivery, officers executed the search warrant and located the parcels inside the residence, including one package that had allegedly been thrown into the attic.

During the search, authorities also recovered a stolen Glock pistol and methamphetamine pills, which were found on top of a refrigerator, according to prosecutors.

Walker is charged with:

  • Receiving and concealing a stolen firearm
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Possession of a device intended to convert a semiautomatic firearm into a fully automatic firearm
  • Three felony firearm counts

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the case highlights ongoing efforts by federal and local agencies to intercept illegal firearm components entering the United States through international mail.

Walker remains bound over for trial. Court records show no plea has been entered as of this writing.
