While the usual statewide last call is 2:00 a.m., the law provides a one-night exception that allows alcohol sales to continue until 4:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, with consumption allowed until 4:30 a.m.
That permission, however, is optional. The state allows it, but it does not require bars to stay open late.

In some cases, owners simply determine that the extra revenue generated between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. does not justify the added expense or liability. As a result, closing times on New Year’s Eve vary widely from bar to bar, even within the same city.
Patrons Should Call Ahead And Confirm Closing Times
Because extended hours are optional, patrons should not assume a bar will be open late just because it is New Year’s Eve. Calling ahead or checking directly with the establishment is the only reliable way to confirm last call and closing time.
This is especially important for people planning transportation late at night or attempting to move between multiple locations after midnight. Many disappointed crowds discover too late that a bar closed at its regular time despite the legal allowance to stay open longer.
Is There A Fee To Stay Open Until 4:00 a.m.?
At the state level, there is no additional liquor license fee required for bars or restaurants to take advantage of the New Year’s Eve extension. The allowance is written into Michigan law and does not require a special permit or advance approval from the state.
That said, staying open later often comes with indirect costs. Bars may need to pay for additional staff hours, hire security personnel, or adjust insurance coverage. Some municipalities may also increase police presence in nightlife districts, which can affect how individual establishments approach late-night operations.
These operational realities are a major reason the extended hours exist more as an option than a standard practice.
Off-Premises Alcohol Sales Are Not Included
The New Year’s Eve extension applies only to bars and restaurants serving alcohol for consumption on site. It does not apply to off-premises alcohol sales.
Liquor stores, grocery stores, and convenience stores must still stop selling alcohol at the normal 2:00 a.m. cutoff, even on New Year’s Eve. This includes 24-hour stores such as 7-Eleven. While the store itself may remain open, alcohol sales must end at the regular time.
This distinction often catches people off guard, particularly those attempting to purchase alcohol after midnight for private gatherings or house parties.
What To Know Before Heading Out
Michigan law gives bars and restaurants flexibility on New Year’s Eve, but that flexibility cuts both ways. Some establishments will stay open deep into the early morning hours, while others will lock their doors at their usual time.
