59-Vehicle Pileup Forces Closure of NB I-75 at McNichols Before Reopening

Northbound I-75 at McNichols has reopened after a major chain-reaction crash involving 59 passenger vehicles and semi trucks forced a full freeway shutdown Tuesday.

The MSP reported receiving a surge of emergency calls around 11:50 a.m. for multiple crashes along northbound I-75 near McNichols. When troopers arrived, they determined the incidents were part of a widespread pileup rather than a single crash.

According to the Michigan State Police, the scene ultimately included approximately 25 separate crashes involving 59 vehicles, with several motorists leaving the area before crash reports could be taken. Despite the scale of the pileup, no injuries were reported.

All northbound lanes were closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to remove damaged vehicles and clear debris. Traffic backups extended for miles and delays worsened through the early afternoon. The freeway officially reopened at 4:05 p.m. EST once cleanup was completed.

This is how winter crashes snowball. If you are driving at a speed or a distance where you need to slam on your brakes to stop, you are asking for trouble.

State police continue urging drivers to slow down, leave extra space, and stop tailgating as winter driving conditions take hold across Metro Detroit.
