FBI Detroit Reports 841 Arrests, Major Crime Disruptions Across Michigan In 2025

The Federal Bureau of Investigation Detroit Field Office says it made 841 arrests over the past year, with 75% tied directly to violent crime, according to Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyon.

Runyon outlined the results as part of the FBI’s year-end review, citing a 20% increase in arrests compared to 2024, driven largely by the bureau’s violent crime and gang enforcement efforts across Michigan.

According to the FBI, agents and task force partners removed 166 firearms from the streets and seized more than 350 kilograms of illegal drugs, cutting off supply chains tied to organized crime, gangs, and repeat violent offenders. Investigators also helped locate 91 missing children and disrupted more than 200 targeted threats of violence aimed at communities and public officials.

On the financial crime side, the FBI reported stopping fraud schemes statewide and securing over $1 billion in restitution for victims, including penalties levied against Hino Motors for defrauding the U.S. government and consumers for nearly a decade.

In matters of national security, FBI Detroit’s counterintelligence program brought charges against six Chinese nationals connected to the University of Michigan, accused of smuggling biological materials into the United States. The bureau’s cyber unit also dismantled a major cryptocurrency exchange used to launder tens of millions of dollars stolen from victims in Michigan and across the country.

Counterterrorism investigations disrupted two ISIS-inspired plots targeting locations in Michigan, involving individuals influenced by ISIS ideology. Agents also arrested two violent extremists accused of coercing children into acts of violence against themselves and others.

Beyond enforcement, the FBI highlighted its victim assistance efforts. In 2025 alone, FBI Detroit victim specialists supported more than 680 victims of federal crimes, including those affected by the attack at the Grand Blanc Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Walmart stabbing incident in Traverse City.

Runyon emphasized that while statistics help measure performance, the bureau’s focus remains on public safety, victim support, and constitutional protections.

The FBI says it continues operating 24/7, 365 days a year, working alongside local, state, and federal partners to address violent crime, fraud, terrorism, and emerging threats across Michigan.
