Fatal Crash Shuts Down I-75 Exit Ramps Near Schaefer Hwy

➡️5:35pm EST: Exit ramps are now back open.

DETROIT — A rollover crash on Detroit’s southwest side left one driver dead Monday afternoon, according to authorities.

The MSP received multiple 911 calls around 2:10 p.m. on Jan. 5 reporting a rollover crash on the northbound I-75 exit ramp to Schaefer Highway.

When troopers arrived, they found a passenger vehicle overturned on the shoulder of the ramp from Schaefer Highway to northbound I-75. Emergency medical crews responded and determined the driver was deceased at the scene.

Preliminary Investigation

Investigators say the driver was traveling northbound on I-75 and exited toward Schaefer Highway. The vehicle was moving too fast for the curve, causing the driver to lose control and leave the roadway into the grassy area along the left shoulder.

The vehicle then continued up the ramp from Schaefer Highway to northbound I-75, struck a metal guardrail, and rolled over before coming to rest on its roof. The driver has not yet been identified.

Authorities also confirmed the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

“We continue to see excessive speed lead to traffic crashes,” said Mike Shaw, a first lieutenant with the Michigan State Police. He said troopers are actively investigating and working to identify the driver.

All ramps in the area remain closed as the investigation continues.

Further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
