Suspect Arrested After Attempting to Access Romulus Middle School

ROMULUS, Mich. — A suspect is in custody after allegedly attempting to gain access to Romulus Middle School while brandishing a firearm, prompting a significant police response and a precautionary lockdown, school officials confirmed.

According to a statement issued by President Laster, the incident unfolded earlier today when an individual attempted to enter Romulus Middle School while displaying a gun. Law enforcement responded immediately, and the suspect was taken into custody by the Romulus Police Department. An active investigation remains underway.

School leadership credited multiple officials and agencies for their swift action, including Ms. Maria Scott, middle school staff, and district leadership. Dr. Edmondson issued a robocall to families across the district outlining the information that could be released at this stage of the investigation.

As a safety precaution, the school was placed under a soft lockdown. Families were asked to allow students to remain inside the building due to the heavy police presence and ongoing investigative activity. Officials said keeping students in place allows school staff and law enforcement to manage the situation safely and effectively.

Authorities emphasized that students are safe and that the lockdown is precautionary. Media were also present on campus as the situation developed.

President Laster expressed gratitude to Dr. Edmondson, Kevin Brock, school staff, and responding officers for their immediate attention and coordination, while also urging the community to avoid speculation as investigators continue their work.

This is a developing story. New Media Detroit will provide updates as additional verified information becomes available.
