An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer opened fire in self-defense Wednesday after a violent rioter attempted to run over federal agents during a targeted operation in Minneapolis, according to officials.
ICE officers were conducting enforcement actions when a group of rioters began physically blocking agents from carrying out their duties. Authorities say one individual escalated the confrontation by weaponizing her vehicle, accelerating toward officers in what was described as an attempt to kill them.
Fearing for his life and the safety of fellow officers and the public, an ICE officer fired defensive shots, striking the alleged attacker. The individual was pronounced deceased. ICE officials say the officer’s actions followed his training and prevented further loss of life.
Several ICE officers were injured during the incident but are expected to make full recoveries. The situation remains under investigation.
Federal officials say the incident reflects a sharp rise in violence against law enforcement, citing a 1,300% increase in assaults and an 8,000% increase in death threats against ICE personnel. Officials directly blamed political rhetoric from sanctuary politicians for fueling hostility and encouraging attacks on officers.
“This is the direct consequence of constant demonization of law enforcement,” officials said in a statement.
This remains an evolving situation, and additional details will be released as they become available.
