PONTIAC, Mich. — Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald has authorized criminal charges against two individuals in unrelated animal cruelty cases, authorities announced this week.
In the first case, Myelia Michelle King, 32, of Ferndale, is charged with Abandoning or Cruelty to 2 or 3 Animals following allegations involving two German Shepherd dogs.
According to prosecutors, Oakland County Animal Control had made multiple prior visits to the property. During a subsequent check, officers found both dogs tethered to a fence with chains that were too short, with no accessible food or water. Investigators reported the animals were malnourished, significantly underweight, and in need of veterinary care. One of the dogs tested positive for heartworm.
In a separate case, Bradley James Vincent, 32, of Troy, is charged with Abandoning or Cruelty to an Animal in connection with the alleged abuse of a mixed-breed dog.
Witnesses told authorities they heard the dog squeal as if in pain and observed the defendant striking the animal. A veterinary examination documented injuries including bruising to the top of the dog’s head, bruises inside the gums, and trauma consistent with being kicked.
“We have a moral responsibility to treat animals in our care humanely,” Prosecutor McDonald said in a statement. “These cases demonstrate how seriously Oakland County law enforcement takes animal mistreatment. We will hold abusers accountable.”
Under Michigan law, Abandoning or Cruelty to 2 or 3 Animals is punishable by up to 1 year in jail, a fine of up to $2,000, and or up to 300 hours of community service. Abandoning or Cruelty to an Animal carries a potential penalty of up to 93 days in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, and or up to 200 hours of community service.
Officials urge residents to report suspected animal abuse or neglect to Oakland County Animal Control at 248-858-1090.
All charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
