Authorities confirmed that Dashonn Moten, 27, was taken into custody Saturday, January 10, in Sterling Heights. Moten is now awaiting extradition to Tennessee, where prosecutors say he faces the possibility of the death sentence.

Moten had been indicted in Knox County in connection with a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, November 16, on Interstate 640 West in Knoxville.

What Investigators Say Happened

Dashonn Moten

According to investigators, Moten was traveling with three other men in a rented, light-colored newer-model Ford Bronco bearing Michigan license plate 26541RF. The group was reportedly driving from Detroit to Atlanta when gunfire erupted inside the moving vehicle.

Two men were killed in the shooting:

  • Troy Hutchison, 33, of Atlanta, Georgia
  • Rodrell Jeter, 25, of Detroit, Michigan

A third victim, a 22-year-old Detroit man, survived.

Investigators allege Moten opened fire inside the SUV, killing two occupants and critically wounding the third, before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

Vehicle Recovery and Investigation

The Ford Bronco was later found abandoned in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Investigators traveled to the scene and recovered the vehicle with assistance from the Villa Hills Police Department. Police later corrected earlier reports that had mistakenly credited Fort Mitchell Police with assisting in the recovery.

Following the shooting, detectives conducted an extensive investigation that included cellphone data analysis, dozens of interviews, and multiple anonymous Crime Stoppers tips.

Charges and Arrest

On November 25, a Knox County grand jury returned a 17-count indictment against Moten, charging him with:

  • Two counts of first-degree murder
  • Two counts of felony murder
  • One count of attempted first-degree murder related to the surviving victim

Investigators stated Moten had no known criminal history in Knox County and was no longer believed to be in Tennessee at the time the indictment was announced.

The Knoxville Police Department requested assistance from the United States Marshals Service, which ultimately led to his arrest in Sterling Heights.

What Happens Next

Moten remains in custody in Michigan and is expected to be extradited to Tennessee to face the charges. Prosecutors have indicated the case is death-penalty eligible.
