GENESEE COUNTY, MI — A false report of a larceny from a vehicle has led to a growing list of felony charges against a Gaines Township man, according to Michigan State Police.
On January 2, troopers from the MSP Flint Post responded to a residence in Gaines Township after receiving a report of a larceny from an automobile. Investigators determined the homeowner had made multiple 9-1-1 calls earlier that same day reporting the same incident.
A preliminary investigation found no evidence that a larceny had occurred during the earlier calls. Troopers identified the reporting party as 63-year-old Brian Howd. While at the residence, troopers observed a firearm inside the garage. Further investigation revealed Howd is a convicted felon and legally prohibited from possessing firearms. He was arrested and lodged at the Genesee County Jail.
On January 15, Howd was arraigned in 67th District Court in Genesee County on the following original charges:
• Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person
• False Police Report of a Felony
• Weapons Felony Firearm
He was given a $10,000 cash or surety bond. His next court appearance was scheduled for January 29 at 8:30 a.m.
Additional Charges Filed After Search Warrant
During the initial January 2 investigation, troopers learned there were additional firearms inside the home. On January 13, MSP executed a search warrant at the residence.
According to police, troopers recovered 24 firearms, suspected narcotics and paraphernalia, ammunition, body armor, and other evidence.
On January 16, Howd was arraigned again in 67th District Court on new charges related to the evidence seized during the search warrant. Those charges include:
• Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person
• Two counts of Weapons Felony Firearm
• Felony Weapons Ammunition Possession by a Prohibited Person
• Controlled Substance Possession of Narcotic Cocaine or Heroin less than 25 grams
Howd remains scheduled to appear in court on January 29 at 8:30 a.m. for further proceedings.
