Detroit Man Arrested After Dog Left in Vehicle for Over 14 Hours in Freezing Ohio Weather

A 24-year-old Detroit man is behind bars in Ohio after authorities say he left his dog locked inside a vehicle for more than 14 hours during single digit temperatures, with no heat, food, or usable water.

DaQuan Baker

Erie County sheriff’s deputies arrested DaQuan Baker Tuesday, January 20th at a hotel in Sandusky, Ohio. Deputies say Baker was staying at the hotel with family members but left the dog alone inside a locked vehicle in the hotel parking lot overnight and throughout the following day.

According to Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth, the situation was dire when deputies arrived. “The dog was suffering,” Sigsworth told FOX 8. “No heat, no food, no water. He claimed he was checking on the dog but from the video that we have been made aware of, there is no indication of that.”

The incident came to light after a hotel security guard called 911 Tuesday afternoon when a bystander noticed the dog inside the vehicle. Sigsworth said temperatures remained in the single digits throughout the day, creating life threatening conditions for the animal. “There was only a frozen water bottle in the car,” he told FOX 8. “The dog had tried to rip the bottle open to get to the block of ice.”

Deputies located Baker inside the hotel, where he was found at the pool area. Authorities say Baker admitted the dog belonged to him.

Erie County Dog Warden Barb Knapp said the dog was severely underweight when rescued. “She is very, very thin,” Knapp told FOX 8. “I could see the hip points and the ribs.”

The dog was transported for medical care and is now recovering at the Erie County shelter.

Baker was arraigned Wednesday in Erie County court and remains lodged in the Erie County Jail. Bond was set at $20,000.
