70-Year-Old Woman Saves 89-Year-Old From Burning Michigan Home

SHIAWASSEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 70-year-old woman is being credited with saving an elderly resident’s life after pulling her from a burning home late Tuesday night in Shiawassee Township.

Michigan State Police said troopers from the Flint Post were dispatched to a residential fire at approximately 11:15 p.m. on January 20. When they arrived, they immediately began searching the home, believing someone could still be trapped inside.

Investigators later determined that before troopers arrived, a 70-year-old female resident wasted no time springing into life-saving action and managed to pull an 89-year-old woman to safety. She was able to drag the elderly woman outside, but was physically unable to move her any farther once they reached the ground.

Troopers then carried the 89-year-old woman away from the home to a safe location, where they waited for medical crews to arrive. Both women were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Police confirmed there were no other occupants inside the residence.

Multiple agencies responded to assist at the scene, including the MSP Fire Investigation Unit, Corunna Fire Department, Shiawassee Fire Department, Owosso Fire Department, Vernon Fire Department, Perry Fire & Rescue, and several local police departments.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

While first responders played a critical role in securing the scene, authorities say the outcome could have been far worse if not for the quick thinking and bravery of the 70-year-old woman who refused to leave the elderly resident behind.
