MINNEAPOLIS — A targeted federal law enforcement operation in Minneapolis ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting and subsequent riots Saturday morning after an armed suspect violently resisted U.S. Border Patrol agents, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS officials said that at approximately 9:05 a.m. CT, federal officers were conducting a targeted operation against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault when another individual approached Border Patrol agents armed with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.
Officers attempted to disarm the suspect, but DHS said the individual violently resisted, leading to an armed struggle. Fearing for their lives and the safety of fellow officers, one agent fired defensive shots, striking the suspect.
Medical personnel on scene immediately rendered aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the suspect was found in possession of two magazines and no identification, raising serious concerns about intent. DHS officials stated the circumstances indicate the individual may have been attempting to carry out a mass casualty attack against law enforcement.
Following the shooting, DHS said approximately 200 rioters arrived at the scene and began obstructing and assaulting officers. Crowd control measures were deployed to protect law enforcement and the public as the situation escalated.
DHS emphasized that the incident remains under investigation and that additional details will be released as they become available.
