DETROIT, MI — The United Auto Workers (UAW) has announced its Michigan endorsements for two statewide offices ahead of the 2026 election cycle, backing Karen McDonald for Attorney General and Garlin Gilchrist for Secretary of State.
The endorsements were decided by the Michigan Community Action Program (CAP) Board, a member-elected body within the union. According to the UAW, the process involved evaluating candidates’ positions and records related to workers’ rights and voting access.
For Attorney General, the UAW endorsed Karen McDonald, citing her background and experience as reasons for its support. Union officials pointed to her upbringing in a working-class family and her prior union membership, as well as her record in public office.
“Workers’ rights are in more danger than ever, and we need an Attorney General like Karen McDonald as our first line of defense for working-class Michiganders,” said Dennis Geno, UAW Local 362 member and Chair of the Great Lakes Bay Area Regional CAP Council.
For Secretary of State, the UAW endorsed Garlin Gilchrist, describing him as an ally of organized labor and emphasizing the role of the office in administering elections and protecting voting access in Michigan.
“Michigan is ground zero for attacks on our right to vote and Garlin Gilchrist is the person we need to protect our democracy,” said Dwayne Walker, UAW Local 900 President and Michigan CAP Council Executive Committee member.
UAW officials said the endorsements are not automatic and are based on deliberation by rank-and-file members involved in the CAP Board.
The endorsements signal early union involvement in the upcoming races, with the UAW indicating it will mobilize its membership in support of its chosen candidates in the months ahead.
