Trump Announces Major U.S.–India Trade Deal After Call With Modi

President Donald J. Trump announced Monday that he reached a sweeping new trade and energy agreement with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a direct call between the two leaders, marking what the White House described as a major geopolitical and economic breakthrough.

According to Trump, Modi agreed to halt India’s purchases of Russian oil and dramatically expand imports from the United States, including energy, technology, agriculture, and coal, in a deal valued at more than $500 billion.

The agreement also includes a sharp reduction in tariffs, with the United States cutting its reciprocal tariff on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, while India will move to reduce its own tariffs and non-tariff barriers on U.S. products to zero.

Trump said the move not only strengthens U.S.–India relations but also puts pressure on Russia’s war economy, potentially accelerating an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The President said the two leaders are “getting things done” in contrast to what he called the failure of global bureaucrats to produce real results.
