Lansing, MI – Michigan drivers are now paying the second-highest gas taxes in the entire United States, trailing only California, after a major fuel tax increase took effect January 1, 2026.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Michigan’s total state and federal gasoline tax burden jumped to $0.87 per gallon in the agency’s January 2026 nationwide survey. That puts Michigan behind only California, which remains the most heavily taxed state at $0.89 per gallon.
Just one year ago, Michigan’s gas tax load was about $0.66 per gallon. The increase to $0.87 represents a 21-cent jump in a single year, vaulting Michigan from the middle of the pack to No. 2 nationally.
The change was driven by the fuel tax hike that went into effect January 1 under Michigan’s inflation-indexed fuel tax law. The statute automatically raises gas taxes each year based on inflation, even when fuel prices remain high, meaning motorists are hit from both sides at the pump.
For a typical Michigan driver buying 15 gallons of gas, that now translates into more than $13 in taxes alone per fill-up, before a single dollar goes toward the actual fuel. Over the course of a year, the increase alone costs drivers hundreds of dollars more.
Only California now charges more in total gas taxes. Several states that once outranked Michigan, including Pennsylvania and Illinois, now fall behind as Michigan’s tax hike pushed it to the top tier of the national list.
The January 2026 survey confirms what Michigan drivers have already felt: Higher prices at the pump are no longer just about oil markets. A growing share of every gallon sold in Michigan now goes straight to government to “fix the damn roads.”
With no relief built into the law, Michigan’s gas tax is set to continue climbing automatically every single year, meaning the state could soon overtake California for the No. 1 spot in the nation for gas taxes.
For drivers, commuters, and small businesses, Michigan has officially become one of the most expensive places in America just to fill a tank.
