Detroit → Detroit police are investigating after the body of a woman was discovered Sunday evening on the city’s east side, prompting a response from the department’s homicide unit.
According to initial reports, officers from the 12th Precinct were on routine patrol around 6 p.m. when they found the woman lying in the street in the 1900 block of Hershey, near Annin Street and just a few blocks from Woodward Avenue and 7 Mile Road. The location is in the general area of Palmer Park.
Authorities have not released the woman’s identity or said how she died, and no suspect information has been provided at this time. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
Online reporting from media crews who responded to the scene described the body as being covered with two distinct types of cloth, with a plastic bag reportedly tied around it. Those details have not been formally confirmed by investigators, but they have been widely noted in early on-scene coverage.
The discovery comes during a stretch of severely cold weather across Metro Detroit. Extended exposure to freezing temperatures can play a role in preserving a body and slowing decomposition, which in some cases may help investigators determine a more accurate timeline if the person had been left outside for an extended period before being found.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Detroit Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 313-596-2260 or call 1-800-Speak-Up to provide tips anonymously.
