MHSAA Referee From Roseville Charged In Teen Messaging Investigation

Warren, MI → A 43-year-old Roseville man who worked as a high school wrestling referee and middle school coach is facing felony charges after police say he sent inappropriate messages to a teenage minor through social media. Stephen Livings was arrested by Warren police on Dec. 19 following an investigation launched after the teen’s parents reported the messages.

Livings was arraigned Feb. 6 in 37th District Court and is charged with using a computer to commit a crime and accosting a child for immoral purposes, both felony offenses that can carry up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Authorities say the case developed after the parents became aware of the communication and contacted police, prompting an investigation by the department’s Special Victims Unit.

According to officials, Livings had served as a referee with the Michigan High School Athletic Association since 2020 and had also coached middle school wrestling. Police noted the situation raised additional concerns because of the authority and trust tied to working around student athletes. He had reportedly officiated at major events, including recent state championships at Ford Field.

The MHSAA confirmed that Livings was immediately and indefinitely suspended once the allegations came to light. He is currently free on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on Feb. 19 as the case moves forward. His attorney has stated that Livings is presumed innocent and intends to contest the charges in court.
