Center Line Man Sentenced To 10 Months In Prison For Threats Against Gov. Whitmer, DTE Shareholders

Detroit, MI → Federal prosecutors announced Feb. 13, 2026, that a 40-year-old Center Line man was sentenced to 10 months in prison after making threats against Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and DTE Energy shareholders.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, Steven Conway received the sentence from U.S. District Judge Robert J. White following his guilty plea to two counts of communicating threats in interstate commerce. In addition to the prison term, Conway will serve two years of supervised release.

Federal officials said the case stems from a series of threats made in early 2025. In January of that year, Conway called a DTE Energy call center in Milwaukee and threatened to “hunt down” and “target for assassination” the company’s shareholders and members.

A few days later, investigators say Conway posted additional threats online, this time targeting Gov. Whitmer. Authorities said he made the statements on a dating website and claimed the governor was on a list “marked for assassination.”

Court records also show Conway has a prior conviction tied to threats made in Macomb County involving a judge and police officers.

U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. said the case highlights the seriousness of threats involving violence and public officials.

“Threats of political violence and retribution are an attack on the rule of law. We will protect our public servants and the regular citizens who make our country free and prosperous,” Gorgon said in a statement.

Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, emphasized that threats made online are treated as serious criminal offenses.

“Threats of violence of this nature, whether directed at public officials, private citizens, or company shareholders, are serious crimes and will be treated as such,” Runyan said. “The FBI will not tolerate any attempt to intimidate, endanger, or coerce individuals through online platforms.”
