Detroit, MI → The Detroit Police Department says it is actively investigating the reported robbery of a woman selling Valentine’s Day baskets in the city’s 9th Precinct and is urging the public not to rely on unverified claims circulating online.
The incident gained attention after a viral social media video showed the woman saying she had just been attacked and robbed while working.
In the video, the woman can be heard saying she had been “jumped and robbed by three boys” who allegedly took all of her baskets. She also described a possible suspect vehicle, saying it was a black Dodge Charger and attempting to share a partial license plate number while asking the community for help.
Detroit Police Director of Media Relations Jasmin Barmore said the department is aware of the viral post and confirmed the case is under active investigation.
“We want to make sure that the community knows that we are aware of this incident,” Barmore said. “We are investigating it, looking into all the evidence, and if anyone has any information, please reach out to us to help us in the investigation,” said Jackson Vidaurri, Manager of DPD Media Relations.
Barmore stressed that detectives have not yet reached any conclusions about what happened and that speculation online has gotten ahead of the facts.
“We have not confirmed any details about this incident,” she said, adding that rumors circulating on social media claiming the situation was fabricated are not coming from the Detroit Police Department.
Police are continuing to gather evidence and are asking anyone with information about the reported robbery to come forward as the investigation moves forward by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
