Two 19-Year-Olds Held Without Bond in Proud Lake Recreation Area Killing

According to authorities, Dshaun Omar Hatton-Street of Romulus and Stephan Larryl Shaw of Taylor were arraigned Wednesday in 52-1 District Court on open murder charges and felony firearm counts in the death of Andre Sontay Avant Jr., 19, of Inkster.

A third individual was initially detained during the investigation but has since been released.

Avant’s body was found early Feb. 16 in Commerce Township near the boat launch at Proud Lake Recreation Area on Wixom Road. A visitor to the park made the discovery. An autopsy later determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

The arrests were made Thursday, February 19, 2026 in Romulus by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard praised investigators for quickly developing leads in the case.

“From the moment this young man was discovered, our team was committed to uncovering the truth,” Bouchard said in a statement. “In just over a week, our team developed the information needed to make these arrests. I am proud of their work and their dedication to ensuring those responsible are brought before the court and held accountable.”

Investigators say the suspects and the victim knew one another. However, authorities indicated none of them had ties to the Proud Lake area, raising questions about why the meeting occurred at that location. Officials also stated none of the three had known criminal histories prior to the incident.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 11 at 9 a.m. before Judge David Law.

The case now moves forward in district court as prosecutors prepare to present additional evidence in the coming weeks.
