Detroit, MI — A Michigan State Police trooper was struck while investigating a separate crash Sunday night on the northbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway near Schaefer Highway.

According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 7:50 p.m. on March 1. The trooper, assigned to the Metro South Post, had his patrol vehicle parked on the
right shoulder with emergency lights activated while handling a prior incident.
Investigators say the driver of a Jeep SUV failed to move over and drove directly into the rear of the marked patrol car. The force of the impact pushed the patrol vehicle into the concrete wall along the right shoulder.
After the initial collision, the Jeep continued across all three northbound lanes before striking the center median wall.
Police say the at-fault driver, identified as a 29-year-old woman from Detroit, exited her vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Troopers have identified her and are actively attempting to locate and interview her. The case remains under investigation pending further review by the prosecutor’s office.
The trooper was evaluated at the scene by Detroit EMS and cleared. As a precaution, he was transported to a local hospital by patrol vehicle due to the force of the crash.
First Lieutenant Mike Shaw issued a reminder to drivers following the incident.
“When you see an emergency vehicle with its lights activated, slow down and move over a lane if it is safe to do so,” Shaw said.
Michigan’s Move Over Law requires drivers to reduce speed and change lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles. Violations can result in fines and potential criminal charges, especially when injuries or property damage occur.
