Detroit Residents Get Second Chance as Court Waives Penalties Through April 2

Detroit, MI – The 36th District Court has announced a Courtwide Amnesty Program set to run from March 9 through April 2, 2026, offering residents a limited-time opportunity to clear outstanding court debt without additional penalties.

During the amnesty period, all late fees, penalties, and warrant costs will be fully waived when individuals pay the original fines and costs owed. The program applies to all adjudicated cases with assessed fines and costs, with the exception of driver’s license reinstatement fees.

Chief Judge William C. McConico said the goal is simple: Remove barriers and give people a real chance to reset.

“This amnesty program provides individuals with a meaningful opportunity to resolve outstanding court debt without the added burden of late fees and warrant costs,” McConico stated. “Our goal is to remove financial barriers and help members of our community move forward. The Court’s staff is fully committed to assisting participants and ensuring the success of this program.”

For many Detroiters, accumulated fees and warrant costs can quickly multiply, turning manageable fines into long-term financial setbacks. The temporary waiver is designed to help individuals close out cases, avoid further enforcement action, and stabilize their standing with the court.

Anyone with outstanding adjudicated fines is encouraged to contact the 36th District Court or visit in person during the program window to determine eligibility and payment options.

This is a short window. Once April 2 passes, standard fees and costs will apply again.
