Rain Moving Across Metro Detroit With Heavy Bursts Expected This Afternoon

Detroit, MI — A wide band of rain is moving across southeast Michigan Thursday afternoon, bringing periods of heavier downpours across metro Detroit and communities along the M-59 corridor, according to the National Weather Service office in Detroit.

Weather officials say showers will continue pushing west to east across the region through the mid- to late-afternoon hours, with radar already showing a concentrated band of heavier rain stretching from the Flint and Pontiac areas down toward Detroit and Ann Arbor.

What to Expect

  • Widespread rain showers across southeast Michigan
  • Short periods of heavier rainfall possible, especially south of the M-59 corridor
  • Rain totals around 0.5 inches expected in many areas
  • Storm movement continuing west to east

Travel Impacts

Drivers should expect reduced visibility and wet roadways during heavier bursts of rain. Officials say ponding of water may occur on roads and in low-lying areas.

Motorists across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties should allow extra travel time during the afternoon commute as conditions may deteriorate quickly when heavier showers move through.

At this point, the rainfall is not expected to reach severe levels, but brief downpours could still create localized nuisance flooding and slower traffic across metro Detroit highways.
