16-Year-Old Charged in Armed Robbery, Shooting on Wayne State University Campus

Detroit, MI – A 16-year-old Detroit juvenile has been charged in connection with an armed robbery and shooting that occurred on the campus of Wayne State University earlier this year.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, Prosecutor Kym Worthy authorized charges against the teen as an adult-designated juvenile, meaning a judge may sentence him either as a juvenile or as an adult if he is convicted.

Authorities say the incident happened around 8:15 p.m. on January 27, 2026, at an apartment building in the 600 block of Williams Mall on the campus of Wayne State University.

Prosecutors allege the juvenile physically assaulted an 18-year-old Detroit man, then produced a handgun and fired it during the confrontation. Investigators say the suspect also stole the victim’s necklace before fleeing the scene.

The case was investigated by Wayne State University Police Department, which led to the juvenile’s arrest on February 26, 2026.

The teen is facing the following charges:

  • Armed Robbery
  • Unlawful Imprisonment
  • Assault With Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm
  • Felonious Assault

A preliminary hearing was held Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at the Juvenile Detention Facility before Referee Leslie Graves, where the juvenile was remanded into custody.

A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 9, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. before Judge Sheila Gibson at the Lincoln Hall of Justice in Detroit.

The charges are allegations and the juvenile is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
