Detroit, MI – Detroit has been ranked No. 3 on a national list of cities where people should avoid walking alone after dark, according to a new report published by MSN.
The list, titled “Never Walk Alone in These 7 Cities After Dark,” was written by Matthias Binder and highlights seven U.S. cities where crime statistics and safety concerns suggest people should take extra precautions when out at night.
Despite the ranking, the report also acknowledges significant progress in Detroit’s crime trends.
According to Binder, Detroit recorded 203 homicides in 2024, the lowest total since 1965, marking what the article calls “extraordinary progress” in the city’s ongoing effort to reduce violent crime. The report notes that Detroit has become a national model for measurable crime reduction and is among the fastest emergency response cities in the country.
However, the article also points out that the broader crime picture remains complicated.
The report states that Detroit’s overall crime rate is still roughly 180% higher than the national average, even as several categories of violent crime have dropped significantly.
Binder wrote that non-fatal shootings in Detroit were cut in half between 2022 and 2024, while carjackings have fallen 71% since 2015.
The report also highlights the growing divide between neighborhoods, describing Detroit as a “tale of two cities.” Areas such as downtown and midtown have become increasingly safe for residents and visitors, while other areas continue to struggle with higher crime levels.
The article also credits technology and infrastructure improvements as part of Detroit’s crime-reduction strategy. Increased CCTV usage and improved street lighting have played a key role in strengthening nighttime surveillance across parts of the city.
Detroit was ranked third on the MSN list, placing it among three of the seven cities highlighted nationwide where the report says people should be cautious about walking alone after dark.
